Update

I know I haven't written in a while - I guess it's been due to lack of motivation after working a 6am to 2:30pm shift which I had to get up at 4am for. For three weeks I was doing that while working at the Hackney Borough Council as a Field Engineer. That's a vastly overstated title mind you. In reality, to put it simply (Rainman style) I was counting cars. It was an easy gig apart from getting up early to catch a train to meet a Greek madman who drove us across town faster than Jenson Button could. Once there we walked around some streets for about an hour noting down number plates, then off to a 'greasy spoon' cafe for a couple of hours to kill time, before going to the office to input the data in a spreadsheet. After lunch we'd go out to recount the cars, then head off home by 1:30. Some days we were doing as little as 3hrs work, but getting paid for a full 8. Sounds unproductive doesn't it? But after working in the local gov't, I realise know that we were probably working hard by their standards.

I've moved on from there now to a construction firm where I'm a quantity surveyor. I started on Mon. It's pretty boring so far and I have to wear shirt and tie, but at least it pays ok and I can get up at a much more civilised 7am. Hopefully, I can stay there for a month or so and decide whether I like working in this industry or want to move on. My feeling so far is that I prefer the engineering industry I was working in at home.
